Speech and Language FAQs

Ever wondered what speech-language pathology is all about? Let’s talk about some frequently asked questions!

What is speech-language pathology?

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work with individuals to assess and treat speech, language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing challenges. In other words, SLPs work with children and adults to improve their ability to communicate with others and swallow.

What are some signs that a child may need speech-language services?

As a parent, you know your child best. If your gut is telling you that your child might benefit from speech and language therapy, trust your instincts and get in contact with an SLP and your pediatrician. An SLP can then complete a comprehensive evaluation of your child’s speech and language skills and give an evidence-based answer on whether speech and language services could benefit your child. My child already gets speech and language therapy at school, do they need private speech therapy as well?

Speech and language therapy in schools is incredibly beneficial and important! However, private speech therapy is often able to target different/additional goals, increase the speed of progress toward goals, and provide more individualized and holistic therapy including working directly with family to provide parent education and support. We find that by combining school and private services, our clients meet their goals much faster and across environments!

What does a typical speech and language therapy session at Engage Therapy Center look like?

Speech and language therapy sessions will look different for every client! People learn best when they are comfortable, motivated, and having fun, so here at Engage we work to build strong relationships with our clients, incorporate movement, use games and activities, and target functional and meaningful goals. The average recommendation is one therapy session per week between 30-50 minutes, however, this will vary depending on each individual and their needs and goals. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to join in therapy sessions and will be given ideas of what to target at home to increase the speed of progress and carryover into home and other environments.
